Message from Supervisor Peter G. Crummey

Welcome to the Town of Colonie website. I am incredibly excited and honored to serve the Town of Colonie as your Supervisor. The opportunity to lead the Town in which I grew up in and raised my children is such a privilege. As you explore our website you will discover the excellent services we provide and the reason the Town of Colonie is a great place to live and do business.

Beginning as a Dutch settlement in the 1600s, the name Colonie is derived from the Dutch term “Colonye,” meaning the settlement outside the city. Today, Colonie offers a stimulating mix of urban, suburban, and rural communities. The Town of Colonie is situated at the crossroads of the Capital Region and enjoys a population of approximately 82,000 residents. The Town, with its large retail and business presence, is often referred to as "the downtown of the Capital Region."

Colonie is also the region’s largest town, covering more than 57 square miles. It includes two incorporated villages, Colonie and Menands, as well as several hamlets and unincorporated population centers – Boght Corners, Latham, Lisha Kill, Loudonville, Mansville, Maplewood, Maywood, Newtonville, Roessleville, Stanford Heights, Schuyler Heights, Verdoy, and West Albany.

Our Town Police Department and Emergency Medical Services Department have received national recognition for excellence, and we are fortunate to have 12 outstanding volunteer fire departments working together to keep us safe. The public and private schools in Colonie are also among the nation’s best.
