Register for the STAR Credit

Why should you register?

The Basic and Enhanced STAR benefits save most New York homeowners hundreds of dollars. If you are eligible and you register, you will receive a check for the amount of your STAR savings.

Who should register?

You should register if you:

  • Bought your home after March 2, 2015;
  • Never applied for the STAR benefit on your primary residence;
  • Received a letter advising you to register for Basic STAR;
  • IMPORTANT: Due to recent changes made by New York state legislation for 2019, the income limit for the basic star exemption is now $250,000. If your income is more than $250,000 you must switch to the star credit to continue receiving your benefit.

NOTE: You do NOT need to register for STAR if you are a longtime homeowner with an existing STAR exemption. See STAR Exemption Program for more information.
To register for the STAR credit or to review the New York State STAR exemption program please contact New York State Department of Taxation at (518) 457-2036.
