What if I have trouble keeping a job?

If you are having trouble keeping a job (6 months to 1 year…unless it's a summer job that may only last a couple of months), something may be in your way and you may not even realize it. Have the strength to handle the situation NOW before no one else will hire you!

Here are some supports that may help.

1. Maybe you need an objective person to help you figure out what's going wrong…

Some sources of help include…

•  Your parent or other trusted adult

•  Your guidance counselor

•  Your school social worker or student assistance counselor

•  The University at Albany Career Services Unit (442-4900). This center offers a wide variety of psychological services to adolescents and adults; including personal and career counseling, personality, intelligence, vocational and learning disability assessments.

•  If your current employer has an EAP (Employee Assistance Program) for part time workers – call them before you lose your job!

2. If your family meets certain income guidelines or you have dropped out of school, you may be eligible for certain federally funded programs. Contact: Career Central @ 462-7600

3. Maybe you need child-care? Contact The Child Care Coordinating Council @ 426-7181

4. Perhaps you have a disability and are unsure what might be helpful to you. Contact New York State VESID @ 473-8097 or Career Central @ 462-7600 and ask for the Disability Program Navigator

5. Maybe you can't keep consistent transportation. Call CDTA and ask to speak with the transportation planner to help you learn the bus system.
