42 nd Street is a musical with a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, lyrics by Al Dubin, and music by Harry Warren. The 1980 Broadway production won the Tony Award for Best Musical and became a long running hit. Its 2001 Broadway revival won the Tony for Best Revival. Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes and the subsequent 1933 film adaptation, it focuses on the efforts of famed dictatorial Great White Way director Julian Marsh to mount a successful stage production of a musical extravaganza at the height of the Great Depression. Producer David Merrick took a $3,000,000.00 gamble which paid off handsomely. Director/choreographer Gower Champion took a cue from Hollywood 's Busby Berkley and filled the stage with spectacular dance routines, starting with 40 pairs of feet tap-dancing away as the curtain slowly rose for the first act.
The Cohoes Music Hall was constructed in 1874, and during its history featured many luminaries of the day, including Buffalo Bill Cody, John Philip Sousa, and Col. Tom Thumb. After years of neglect the Hall was restored and re-opened in 1975. It has since been the venue for many dramatic and musical performances.
