A Journey Through Our Town:

Girl Scout Project Leads to Second Edition of Book on Colonie! On Sale Now!

In 1984, five members of Latham's Senior Girl Scout Troop 38, of the Hudson Valley Girl Scout Council, combined their talents and a common interest which earned them the Gold Award, the highest in Scouting and also helped the young students of Colonie to learn more about their town. The Scouts, Elizabeth Wayner, Karen Ray, Jennifer Kirkland, Kerry Ellis and Lynn Bergdorf, began to research facts and points of interest about the history of Colonie with the assistance of Mrs. Jean 0lton, Town Historian. Their objective was to complete their findings into a workbook to be used at
the fourth grade level. The teaching of local heritage had recently been mandated by the State Department of Education and there was a lack of material to meet the need. The book was entitled " A Journey Through Our Town," Colonie, New York. Although the word games, puzzles and cut, color and paste activities mainly appeal to children, the facts, photos and tour pages have been enjoyed by persons of all ages and have been a real community project.

In 2002, Troop Leaders, Donna Wayner and Francia McCashion, Karen King,
Christine Kozlowski, and Ellen Elie, along with Historian Jean 0lton, realized the book needed to be updated. A Silver Award has been earned by Scouts Amanda King and Mary Kozlowski for their work on additions and updating architecture, maps, etc., in the 2002 edition of Cadette Troop 70.

This book is divided into Chapters devoted to Indian culture, Dutch heritage, Shaker history, street names and origins. Also, early views, travel architecture, and a description of our Town Government. A tour of our town and map are included.

The book may be purchased at the Town Historian's Office or the Town Clerk's Office at Memorial Town Hall, The Pruyn House, Shaker Heritage Society, or may be ordered through the mail.

The price per copy is $5.00, plus $2.00 for postage and handling. Make checks payable to the 'TOWN OF COLONIE' and mail to:
