April Programs

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK 2008
Sunday – Saturday, April 13-19

Help celebrate National Library Week! Visit the Youth Services Dept. between Sunday, April 13th and Saturday, April 19th and complete our library scavenger hunt. All participants will receive a prize just for trying…and all completed entries will be entered into a drawing to be held at the end of the week. Limit one entry per child, please.

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH
April is National Poetry Month and we have hundreds of humorous poems for you to enjoy! Take a look at our very clever collection of original limericks written by local students. Find out who won this year's competition while enjoying the talents of all our young writers! Look for our Limerick Display in Youth Services.

 

Spring Break Programs

Pancakes for Breakfast
Monday, April 14 at 10 AM

Do you love pancakes?! We have a program for you. Lots of pancake stories served up with piping hot pancakes topped with all sorts of toppings. You must be 4 years old or older to attend this scrumptious program. Register in-person only, starting Sunday, March 30 in Youth Services. No phone registration, please.

CREATIVE CRAFTS
Tuesday, April 15 from 10-11:OO AM

Let your imagination soar… Between the hours of 10-11 AM on Tuesday morning, we will have free craft materials available for you to "make & take" something grand. Join us for a morning of creative fun! Registration is not necessary and kids of all ages are welcome.

MOVIES AT THE LIBRARY
Wednesday, April 16 at 10:00 AM & 6:30 PM

At 10:00 AM we will be showing some short Films and Fingerplay Fun for the younger patrons, then at 6:30 PM we will be showing the season's family favorite, Enchanted.

Film and Fingerplay Fun Time for Preschoolers at 10:00 AM
Have you spent endless hours searching for your child's lost "irreplaceable" well-worn and still loved stuffed animal? If you have, you will surely relate to these short films from Weston Woods. Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems and I Lost My Bear by Jules Feiffer will be followed by some stories, fingerplays and activities your child will be sure to enjoy.
Register in-person only, starting Sunday, March 30 in Youth Services. No phone registration.

Then at 6:30 PM is Enchanted (PG)
A classic Disney fairytale collides with modern-day New York City in a story about a fairytale princess who is sent to our world by an evil queen. Soon after her arrival, Princess Giselle begins to change her views on life and love after meeting a handsome lawyer. Can a storybook view of romance survive in the real world? Register in-person only, starting Sunday, March 30 in Youth Services. No phone registration.

Pizza Party and Book Swap
Wednesday April 16 from 11:30-12:30 PM for K-2 graders
Wednesday April 16 from 12:30-1:30 PM for 3-5 graders

Pizza appetite required! Also bring some gently used or new books to trade. We'll be eating pizza and trading our books. K-2 come from 11:30-12:30 and 3-5 come from 12:30-1:30 PM. Register in-person only, starting Sunday, March 30 in Youth Services. No phone registration.

Community Day
Thursday, April 17 from 10-11:30 AM

What do you want to be when you grow up…doctor postman, fireman, veterinarian, dentist, or baker? All of these and even more will be at the library Thursday, April 17 from 10-11:30 AM. You will have the opportunity to talk to each community helper and even have your picture taken with them. Bring your camera and come meet these important people in our community. This program is suitable for children in elementary school. No registration is required. Just drop into the Stedman Room anytime between 10-11:30 AM.

Baby & Me
Friday, April 18 from 9:30-11:00 AM

Children up to age 36 months and their caregivers are invited to join us on Friday morning anytime between 9:30 and 11:00 to meet new families and make new friends. You'll find shelves of books to share, buckets of toys to play with, and plenty of room to move around. Please make other arrangements for older siblings, as this is a special program just for the little ones. No registration is necessary.

DROP-IN MOTHER'S DAY STORYTIME

Spend some time together enjoying stories, fingerplays, and songs about that very special lady—Mom! For children of all ages and their parents/caregivers. Offered Wednesday evening at 6:30 PM and Thursday at 10 AM. No registration needed; just drop-in!

MOTHER'S DAY DROP-IN CRAFT
Monday – Saturday, May 5-10

Wouldn't you like to surprise Mom with a nice gift for Mother's Day? Come to Youth Services to "make & take" something special for your Mom (or Grandma)! We will have free craft materials available at the Youth Services Desk during regular library hours, from Monday, May 5 until Saturday, May 10. This craft is suitable for all ages, although younger children may need the help of an adult. No registration needed.


Ongoing Activities...

SCRAPBOOKING
Friday Evening: April 11 from 6-10 PM
Weekend: May 16 - 17

With all of these new scrapping dates, it's time to catch up on last year's photos and start on this year! Bring your own pictures, albums and whatever else you may have for scrapping and we'll supply tools, punches, and other gadgets for you to use. Double the fun by bringing a friend or child over the age of 12 years. Fridays we meet from 6:00 - 10:00 PM and weekends include an all day Saturday (9am – 5pm) so you can leave out your materials on Friday for the following morning. Register at the Youth Services Desk and, please, let us know if you are new to Scrapbooking.

MOTHER DAUGHTER BOOK TALK
Saturday, April 26 at 2:00 PM

The Mother / Daughter Book Talk will be held on two Saturday afternoons and one Sunday afternoon this spring: Note the following changes in our meeting time.
March 1, April 26 will be the Saturday afternoons at 2:00 PM, and March 30 we will meet on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM. This spring session of the Book Talk is currently filled, but we will register girls and mothers again in the fall for a new session. If you will be entering 5th-8th grade next fall, think about joining us! Announcements for that program will be in the September/October newsletter.

Chess Club
Mondays, April 7 & 21

The Beginner's Chess Club members have been sharpening their chess skills with our leader, David Chen, a 10th grader at Shaker High School. We will be continuing with the club in March and April. You must be in 2nd grade or older to participate. The Chess Club is held on the 1st & 3rd Monday of each month and is held in the Children's Activity Room. At the present time,we are full, but you can check at the Youth Services Desk to see if space becomes available.

STAMP CLUB
Twice-a-Month Saturdays at 10:00 AM

If you are in grades 4-9, sign up for the Stamp Club! We meet twice a month on Saturday mornings. Whether you are just starting out or already a collector, you will enjoy looking through and choosing stamps to add to your collection.
Dates for 2007-2008 are:

October 13 & 27
November 10,
December 1 & 15
January 5 & 19
February 2 & 16
March 1 & 15
April 5

If you have canceled stamps, no matter how many or how few, how old or how new, that you would like to donate to the Stamp Club, you can leave them at the Youth Services Help Desk. Register in Youth Services.
