"The only new thing
in the world is the history you don't know." -- Harry
S. Truman
Welcome to the History Page of the Virtual Library.
The Internet links are slightly weighted to American History; however
I've found a few on world history that I hope are useful. Please inform
me by e-mail of particularly good history sites. My address is at
the bottom of this page. - Joe Nash
History Web Sites
The American Civil War Homepage - http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/
Five years old and getting better all the time; named one of the top
100 educational sites for 1999.
The American
Family Immigration History Center http://www.ellisislandrecords.org
is now available on-line. It uses state of the art computer technology
to bring Immigrant arrival records from 1892-1924 to one's fingertips.
For a nominal fee, visitors can receive a printout of their family's
data, plus a picture of the ship on which they arrived. However, the
site is difficult to access, because of the number of people trying
to access it.
The American West - http://www.AmericanWest.com/
A nice history about all aspects of the American West. The subtitle
of the site is "A Celebration of the Human Spirit."
The Cybrary
- http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/6617/amlist.html
Multi-award winning site for students. This one is for American
History.
The Cybrary
- http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/6617/whgen.html
Same as above only for World History (categories include: Prehistory,
Ancient Egypt, Ancient Mesopotamia, Greece. Rome, Medieval Europe, and
Renaissance).
Famous Trials
- http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/ftrials.htm
I can't say enough about this site for famous trials in American
history. It is, a most interesting site. Using trial transcripts,
maps, and numerous other primary documents, this site has information
on twelve cases, including the Salem Witchcraft Trials, the Scopes
"Monkey" Trial, and the Scottsboro Boys Trial.
The History Channel - http://www.historychannel.com/
A good place to start if you like history and cable TV's History
Channel.
HyperWar - http://metalab.unc.edu/hyperwar/
A hypertext history of World War II.
Library of Congress American Memory - http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/index.html
a nice site with topics including "today in history", to African
American, Native American and military history, and much more.
Texts and Documents - http://history.hanover.edu/texts.htm
This is a GREAT web site! Primary documents from the beginning
of human history divided into two categories: Europe, and East
Asia. If you want history when it was written, go here.
U.S. Historical Documents - http://www.law.ou.edu/hist/#pre
Another good source for primary documents. This site concentrates
on United States History: the complete texts of everything from
the Magna Carta and Iroquois Constitution to President Clinton's
1998 State of the Union Address.
