Bright & Night

October 1-30

Reception: Sunday, October 5, 2:00-4:00 pm

There are many ways to use our time in this life of ours. What we choose to do with it lies, in part, in ascertaining what interests and excites us, and then in directing our energies in the pursuit of those things as best as we understand them, moment to moment.

Along the way we encounter people and events that seemingly steer us further toward—or away from—what we think we want. There are unexpected twists and turns and detours, no matter who we are. Sometimes we decide that taking the side road (the “road less traveled?”) is more scenic and more interesting—and we then have a completely new experience. How
we are able to “change course,” and how determined we are to get back on the road we started on, has a lot to do with where we end up. Our trip inevitably ends up looking completely different than the image we held in our head. And often what we think of the picture that finally begins to take shape has a lot to do with whether we decide to like or dislike the view.

I’ve been traveling the artist’s way for fifteen years now, since I first began learning to make pictures and express ideas through them. The pictures have changed, the subjects too, but my fascination with light has not. It doesn’t matter to me whether the source is the sun or a light bulb: there is something endlessly compelling about the color and the quality of light—and the contrasting shadows that help describe the world we live in.

Perhaps, then, happiness for me might be defined as an ongoing journey into the light. My wish is for that same light to have also touched you, added beauty to your world, and illuminated your own path.
